Goodwill Car Donations

Goodwill is a large nonprofit organization located in North America that provides training, education and career services to the disabled and disadvantaged. They help the welfare dependent, the homeless and those with physical and intellectual disabilities. Last year alone Goodwill provided both jobs and education to more than 900,000 people. There are Goodwill stores located all over the country where you can purchase donated materials such as apparel and housewares. One way to help this organization is with Goodwill car donations.

You can donate almost anything you no longer want to Goodwill, including vehicles. These vehicles are used in a variety of ways. Some of them are used for the Wheels-to-Work program, which helps employed individuals maintain transportation to and from work. Other vehicles are sold and the proceeds used for funding programs like job training and education for the disabled and disadvantaged. These programs help individuals become independent, properly functioning members of society.

If you want to donate your vehicle to Goodwill there are some regulations you should be aware of. Taxpayers are allowed to deduct the exact amount that the charity received from the sale of the vehicle. You will receive a document that states the exact amount of sale. This document will be required when filing your income taxes. If the vehicle brought in more than $500 you will need to provide this documentation along with Form 8283. For vehicles that are used as part of Wheels-to-Work, the deduction will be the estimated amount of value at the time of donation.Goodwill is required to provide you with documentation of this value within 30 days of donation whether or not the car is sold or used as part of the transportation program as described above.
